Cambodia - Discover the land of the Khmer
Friendly people, a recent and sad history and a beautiful temple complex are some of the ingredients of this beautiful country. But there is so much more, because Cambodia has beautiful islands, beautiful nature and beautiful architecture. In short, no matter what you love, in Cambodia you will always find what you are looking for.
Best travel time?
Are you planning to visit Cambodia during the summer vacations? That is possible, but in the period from May to October you should expect more rain. In some cases this can also lead to flooding and flooded streets. The temperature is fine with an average of 30 degrees.
The months November to April is the best period to travel to Cambodia. It rains much less and the temperature is also around 30 degrees. Finally, in these months it is less touristic than in the summer vacations.
Visa for Cambodia?
If you are going to Cambodia you will need a visa. Therefore you have to go to the embassey in your home country. It is easier to have a specialized agency arrange a visa for you. Or you can arrange this yourself upon arrival in Cambodia. You only have to pay $30 at the airport. If you enter Cambodia by land you can obtain a visa at most land borders. Experience shows that this costs $35.
Cambodia and it's history?
Cambodia has had a recent and very sad history. From 1975 to 1979 Pol Pot was in power. Under his leadership an estimated 1 to 2 million people were killed. On a population of 8 million that was 25% of the Cambodians. Much of this fierce period can still be seen in the country, especially in the capital Phnom Penh.
But Cambodia also has a beautiful history that goes back to beautiful temples from the Khmer empire (802-1431). These sanctuaries can be seen in large parts of the country with Angkor Wat as the most important of course. For centuries Angkor was the capital of this powerful empire in Southeast Asia.
How does your trip to Cambodia look like?
Cambodia is becoming more and more popular with tourists. But still there are a lot of travelers who ‘just’ visit Cambodia and only Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. A shame! Because if you go to this beautiful country you really don’t have enough when you visit the most important places for 3 weeks. Here are a few nice possibilities.
Phnom Penh is the capital and usually the starting point of the trip. Here you can visit the Tuol Slueng prison and the Killing Fields. Under the reign of Pol Pot the most terrible events happened here between 1975 and 1979.
Siem Reap is the gateway to the temples of Angkor Wat. Impressive and an absolute must to go to. Pull at least 2 days for it, because there is enough to see in this old capital of the Khmer.
The east of Cambodia is not very touristy. And that is a pity, because the provinces of Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri are special places for beautiful walks through the beautiful nature.
Do you want to enjoy the beach at the last moment? Then go to Sihanoukville and take the boat to one of the beautiful islands of Cambodia, such as Koh Rong or Koh Rong Samlon. Staying in Sihanoukville? Opinions are very divided, also among the Cambodians.
