Discovering history?

Tbilisi has been the capital of several successive Georgian kingdoms since the 5th century. It began in the 4th century with the construction of a citadel, the Narikala Fortress. You can find this one on top of the mountain near the Old Town. This fortress was located near hot springs. That’s where Tbilisi gets its name from (Tpili means hot, “warm location”). Tbilisi was on several trade routes between Europe and Asia. Over the centuries, artisans from all parts of the world came to the place. Persian, Arab, Byzantine and later Russian and Soviet influences shaped the identity of the ancient city.

Wondering what you can explore in Georgia’s capital city? Here are some of the main attractions.

Narikala Fortress

On the hill above the old city you will find this extraordinary fortress. It originates from the 4th century AD, although most of the foundations date from the 16th and 17th centuries. On the hill you can visit St. Nicholas Church and the botanical gardens, among other things. From the hill you have a beautiful view of Tbilisi and the surrounding area. You can get there by a short walk or by cable car, the Mother of Georgia Tramway.

Sameba kathedraal

This is now Georgia’s most important sanctuary. It is also called the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and is the seat of the Georgian Orthodox Church. It dates back to 1995. As a result, it has only a short history. The reason for its construction was the 1,500th anniversary of the Georgian Orthodox Church and about 2,000 years after the birth of Jesus Christ.

Metekhi cathedral

Near the Kura River, opposite the old town you will find this beautiful cathedral. It is also called the Metekhi Virgin Mary Assumption Church and dates back to the 13th century. However, a church is said to have already stood on this spot in the 5th century AD. Next to the cathedral is a statue of Vakhtang Gorgasali I (5th century). He is considered the founder of Tbilisi.

Georgian National Museum

Would you like to visit a museum in Tbilisi? Then go to the Georgian National Museum. Open since 2004, it houses a large collection of objects about Georgia’s history. Among other things, you will find human remains from about 1.8 million years ago. This is the oldest sign of human existence outside of Africa. The museum is located north of Liberty square.

Bridge of Peace

Another impressive landmark is the Bridge of Peace. This bridge is located over the Koera River (Mtkvari) and connects the old city with the new district. Thus, it also connects the distant past with today’s modern life. The bridge is 150 meters long and has been in use since 2010.
