Guangzhou, also better known by its historical name of Canton is a giant city of nearly 20 million people. It is among one of the most important cities in the country and also has one of the most important ports in the world. The Portuguese discovered this place as early as the sixteenth century, and in 1728 the Dutch East India Company was able to trade with China from a trading post. On the island of Shamian you can still discover a lot of history. Other attractions are the Canton Tower (see photo), Baiyun Mountain and a number of interesting museums and temples.
