One of the best things to do in Laos is to make a motorbike tour on the Bolaven plateau. This tour, called the ‘Pakse loop’, will take you past wonderful nature, from beautiful landscapes to dazzling waterfalls. Because the Pakse loop is just the waterfalls loop, right?

Pakse is a city of about 100,000 inhabitants in the south of Laos. Personally I found this city a little bit disappointing and there is not much to do. But Pakse is the starting point of this beautiful tour on the motorbike.

The Pakse loop: how do I arrange this?

Because of my broken toe I hesitated to make the Pakse loop. Finally I decided to do it and I rented a scooter from Miss Noy & Mr. Yver Motorbike Rental. Every day At the end of the afternoon they organize a meeting to inform you about the whole route. And you get a map with all the highlights of the loop!

You can do a small (two days) or a big route (3 days). Especially the big route over the plateau has a few dangers. Sometimes scooters are stolen. But with a bit of common sense you don’t have to be afraid of that. I decided to do the two-day route. Below I give an impression of this beautiful Pakse loop and you immediately understand why you should’nt miss this trip in Laos!

The Pakse loop: day 1

It is recommended to drive the route clockwise. And I would definitely recommend it, because on the second day you will see the real highlights.

Pakse Motorbike loop: Tad Phasuam Falls
The first real stop at a waterfall: the Tad Phasuam Falls.
Relaxing at Tad Phasuam Falls, Pakse
A small waterfall, but lovely to relax for an hour!

Sadly I have a broken toe… no swimming for me!
Beautiful Nature, Bolaven Plateau
Don’t forget to stop and enjoy the beautiful nature that Laos has to offer…

Temple and oldest tree of Laos
In search of the oldest tree in Laos… This tree is not on the map of Miss Noy & Mr. Yves but it will bring you to a temple.
Oldest tree of Laos
There he is! The oldest tree in Laos with a respectable age of more than 1000 years old.
Local Village Bolaven Plateau Pakse
When you go off the main road e you end up in local villages. A group of young children pose for me and then scream ‘money money’ to me. Like a generous uncle I gave them my wallet…
Tat Soung, Pakse loop
Next stop is the view from Tat Soung. It is not rainy season and the waterfall is almost dry. From this point I have a nice view of the surroundings.

The Pakse loop is beautiful! Also here I could enjoy the beautiful view from Tat Soung for hours.
Near Mama Pap Guesthouse in Tad Lo
At the end of the afternoon I arrive in Tad Lo. I spend the night at Mama Pap Guesthouse for the equivalent of €2.50. Especially the large pancakes the owner makes for breakfast are delicious!
Tad Hang Falls, Tad lo, Pakse loop
At the end of the afternoon you can enjoy swimming in the river at the Tad Hang Waterfall.
A river to relax, Tad Lo, Laos
Tad Lo is a small town and most of the tourists of the Pakse loop stay here. But is it als very crowded? Personally It was fine for me. It’s not necessary booking a room in advance. There is a lot of accommodation available here!
Lao Beer at Tad Lo, Laos
Finally, in the evening it is time to relax with an alcoholic drink along the quiet river. The first day of the Pakse Loop is over!

The Pakse loop: day 2

Of course you can always decide to stay another day in Tad Lo. Afterwards I would have liked to do that, but with a broken toe I could not swim in a rocky river and most people stay here to relax near the falls. On the second day it’s all about beautiful waterfalls…

Laos and Cows, Pakse loop
Cows on the road! Laos is mainly an agricultural society and this kind of thing often occurs!
Tad Yuang Falls, Pakse loop
Perhaps the most beautiful waterfall during the Pakse loop, the Tad Yuang waterfall. A double waterfall, 40 meters high.
Tad Fane Waterfall, highest of Laos?
The highest waterfall in Laos, Tad Fane. This water drops down 120 meters. As far as I know it is not possible to hike to the bottom of the Tad Fane, but the view from above is impressive!

For the real daredevils among us: it is possible to zipline above the high ground.
Cham Pee Waterfall, Pakse loop
The beauty of all the falls is that they are all totally different. Also here it is possible to swim and relax!
Shower at Cham Pee waterfall
… or to take a nice shower!
E-Tu waterfall, Bolaven Plateau
Finally the E-Tu waterfall. It’s late in the afternoon, but I wouldn’t miss this beautiful waterfall, situated in a small gorge.
Beautiful nature of Bolaven Plateau
The sunset! Enjoy the beautiful colors of nature…

One last picture and then it’s time to go…
On the Motorbike to Pakse
My last ride… into the sunset. I’m a poor lonesome cowboy!

And? Would you like to do the Pakse Loop?

I hope I convinced you, if you ever go to Pakse, to make this beautiful ride through the magnificent nature of the Bolaven Plateau. Take your time and enjoy the Pakse loop!
