A Little Bit of History

Georgia’s history began with the ancient kingdoms of Colchis and Iberia, which flourished between the sixth century BC and the early centuries AD. Colchis became famous in Greek mythology as the destination of Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. In 337 AD, Georgia officially adopted Christianity, becoming one of the world’s earliest Christian nations. During the eleventh and twelfth centuries, King David IV “the Builder” unified the kingdom and initiated a remarkable period of political and cultural prosperity. Under Queen Tamar (1184–1213), Georgia experienced its Golden Age, becoming one of the strongest kingdoms in the Caucasus. Consequently, magnificent monasteries, churches, and fortified towns flourished throughout the country.

Following the Mongol invasions during the thirteenth century, Georgia experienced centuries of conflict involving Persian, Ottoman, and Russian powers. In 1801, eastern Georgia was annexed by the Russian Empire, followed by the incorporation of western regions during the nineteenth century. After a brief period of independence beginning in 1918, Georgia became part of the Soviet Union in 1921. The country regained full independence in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. UNESCO later recognized the historical monuments of Mtskheta, Gelati Monastery, and Upper Svaneti for their exceptional cultural significance. Today, Georgia proudly preserves one of the oldest Christian and cultural traditions in Europe and the Caucasus.

Best Travel Time?

Georgia enjoys a diverse climate, ranging from subtropical conditions along the Black Sea coast to alpine weather in the Caucasus Mountains. The best months to visit are May, June, September, and October, when temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities. During these seasons, visitors can comfortably explore monasteries, fortresses, vineyards, and historic mountain villages. Summer brings lively cultural festivals, traditional celebrations, and excellent hiking opportunities, although popular destinations become busier. Autumn is especially attractive because of the grape harvest and Georgia’s famous wine festivals. Therefore, spring and autumn provide the perfect combination of pleasant weather, cultural events, and historical exploration.

How Many Days?

A three-day visit is sufficient to explore Tbilisi’s historic center, Narikala Fortress, and several nearby religious monuments. Spending seven days allows visitors to discover Mtskheta, Kakheti, Uplistsikhe, Kazbegi, and several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Travelers with ten to fourteen days can explore Svaneti, Kutaisi, Vardzia, Batumi, and numerous medieval monasteries across the country. Popular day trips from Tbilisi include Jvari Monastery, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, and the David Gareja Monastery complex. Longer itineraries also allow visitors to experience remote mountain villages, traditional winemaking regions, and spectacular Caucasus scenery. Consequently, one week offers an excellent introduction, while two weeks reveal Georgia’s remarkable historical and cultural diversity.

Visa

Georgia offers visa-free entry for citizens of many countries, while travelers from other nations may need to obtain a visa before departure. Some nationalities are eligible for an e-visa, making the application process straightforward and convenient. Travelers should ensure that their passport remains valid for the required period beyond their intended stay, while national identity cards are generally not accepted for international entry. Customs regulations apply to alcohol, tobacco, cash, valuable goods, and certain agricultural products entering or leaving Georgia. Entry requirements may occasionally change, including visa regulations and border procedures. Before traveling, always verify the latest Georgia visa requirements and passport regulations through the official Georgian government website or your national foreign affairs authority.

Vaccinations?

No mandatory vaccinations are generally required for international travelers visiting Georgia directly from countries without specific health risks. Routine immunizations, including tetanus, diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and seasonal influenza, are recommended before departure. Additional vaccinations, such as hepatitis A or hepatitis B, may be advisable depending on travel plans and personal medical circumstances. Malaria is not considered a significant risk in Georgia, although tick bites may occur in rural and forested areas during warmer months. Travelers visiting high mountain regions should prepare for altitude changes and rapidly changing weather conditions. Because travel health recommendations may change over time, consult your local travel vaccination clinic or public health authority well before departure for the latest advice.

Food & Drinks – Taste the Local Cuisine

Georgian cuisine is celebrated for its rich flavors, fresh ingredients, and centuries-old culinary traditions. Influenced by Europe, the Middle East, and the Caucasus, Georgian food combines aromatic herbs, walnuts, cheeses, vegetables, and grilled meats in unique ways. Moreover, Georgia is widely regarded as one of the world’s oldest wine-producing regions, with archaeological evidence of winemaking dating back approximately 8,000 years. Traditional meals are closely connected to the famous supra, a festive gathering that celebrates hospitality and local culture. Every region offers distinctive specialties that reflect local history and agricultural traditions. Consequently, tasting authentic Georgian cuisine is an essential part of every historical journey.

Five Traditional Georgian Dishes to Try

How to Get there?

Flights

Georgia is primarily accessed through Tbilisi International Airport, the country’s largest international gateway. Additional international airports in Kutaisi and Batumi provide convenient connections to many European and regional destinations. Direct flights from numerous European cities generally take between three and five hours, while travelers from North America usually require one or two connections. Visitors arriving from Asia, Australia, or South America commonly connect through major hubs in Europe or the Middle East. Booking flights several months in advance often results in lower fares, particularly during spring and autumn. After arrival, airport buses, taxis, ride-hailing services, and rental cars provide convenient transportation to Georgia’s historical destinations.

Public Transport

Georgia has an affordable and expanding public transportation network connecting major cities and popular tourist destinations. Modern trains link Tbilisi with Batumi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, and several other important cities in comfort. Intercity buses and traditional marshrutkas (shared minibuses) provide frequent connections to monasteries, mountain villages, and historical landmarks throughout the country. Tbilisi’s metro system offers a fast and inexpensive way to explore the capital’s historic districts. Purchasing train tickets in advance is recommended during busy travel periods, especially in summer. Therefore, public transportation offers a practical and economical way to experience much of Georgia’s remarkable historical heritage.

Car Rental

Renting a car provides excellent flexibility for travelers wishing to explore Georgia’s remote monasteries, ancient fortresses, wine regions, and spectacular mountain scenery. A rental vehicle makes it easier to reach destinations such as Vardzia, Tusheti, Svaneti, and many smaller historical villages that have limited public transport. International visitors generally need a valid driving licence, while some nationalities may also require an International Driving Permit. Main highways are generally well maintained, although mountain roads can be narrow, winding, and occasionally challenging. Drivers should check weather conditions before traveling through high mountain passes, particularly during winter and early spring. Nevertheless, renting a car remains one of the best ways to discover Georgia’s extraordinary historical and cultural treasures at your own pace.
